  1. 1727-1797. British Radical politician,
  2. imprisoned for his political views; member of
  3. Parliament 1757-64 and from 1774. He
  4. championed parliamentary reform, religious
  5. toleration, and US independence. Wilkes, born
  6. in Clerkenwell, London, entered Parliament as
  7. a Whig in 1757. His attacks on the Tory prime
  8. minister Bute in his paper The North Briton
  9. led to his outlawry in 1764; he fled to
  10. France, and on his return in 1768 was
  11. imprisoned. He was four times elected MP for
  12. Middlesex, but the Commons refused to admit
  13. him and finally declared his opponent
  14. elected. This secured him strong working- and
  15. middle-class support, and in 1774 he was
  16. allowed to take his seat in Parliament.
